Glenys Kinnock News: - According to reports, Glenys Kinnock, an earlier British cabinet minister, European Parliament member, and the wife of former Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock, has died. She was 79 years old. Kinnock died on Sunday at her London home, six years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, according to her family.
Kinnock rose through the ranks from schoolteacher to outspoken politician to cabinet member under former Prime member Gordon Brown, and she was well-known for her efforts to alleviate poverty and hunger in Africa and other parts of the world.
"She was a huge figure in liberal politics for many years: incredibly smart, brave, strong and resolute in sticking up for what she thought was right," Blair was quoted as saying. "Whether in fighting the cause of development, and achieving the elimination of global poverty, social justice in Britain, equality for women or presenting the case for a European Union of weight and influence in the world, Glenys was passionate and convincing."
Kinnock was a member of the European Parliament from Wales for 15 years until Brown appointed her a baroness in 2009 so she could be his minister for Europe. During her stay in Brussels, she became involved in a scandal with dozens of other European Parliament members for signing in each day to earn a daily stipend of 175 pounds ($222) and then leaving.
