Early Career: - Mirriam Johnson was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 25, 1943, and was reared in a strict Pentecostal environment. Her father was a racing driver, and her mother was a Pentecostal preacher. Colter started playing the piano at her church when she was 11 years old. She began singing in Phoenix bars after graduating from Mesa High School in 1961. After marrying musician Duane Eddy in 1961, she recorded two singles on the Jamie label under her own name, Mirriam Johnson. The debut single, "Lonesome Road," had limited broadcast in a few US areas, but not enough to hit any national charts. Johnson would not record again for over a decade after a second song failed to even achieve regional radio.

Career: - In 1970, Johnson, now known as "Jessi Colter," restarted her music career. Waylon Jennings and Colter recorded duets on two top 40 country chart successes that year. She played piano for her husband during his performance on The Johnny Cash Show on March 25, 1970. Her debut album, A Country Star is Born, was released by RCA, with Jennings and Chet Atkins co-producing. The record was not a commercial success and had little influence on the country music market. Colter's lone record for RCA, and she quickly departed the company. Her visage, though, appears on numerous Jennings album covers from this era. Colter signed with Capitol Records in 1975. Her debut single, "I'm Not Lisa," was published on the label.
