He began his career with the BBC in 1971 as a television analyst and called more than 2000 games on radio and television. Early Life & Career: - As a reporter in Barnet, Motson started his career in the newspaper industry. He originally covered football while working for the Sheffield Morning Telegraph in 1967 and 1968. When the BBC engaged Motson as a sports broadcaster for Radio 2 in 1968, his career in broadcasting took off. In December 1969, he provided his first radio analysis of an Everton vs. Derby County game. He started appearing as a regular pundit on the BBC's Match of the Day in October 1971.

 In 1977, Motson worked as a commentator for the FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Liverpool. Except for 1995 and 1996, Motson provided commentary for every FA Cup final that the BBC broadcast between 1979 and 2008. When the Hillsborough tragedy occurred in April 1989, Motson was providing commentary for the FA Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. In 2007, Brian Clough was selected by Motson as his "great life" on the BBC Radio 4 biographical show Great Lives.

Motson traveled to South Africa as a member of the BBC delegation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, but he did not commentate on any live games. Instead, he provided reports on the BBC website and occasionally appeared as a studio guest on the Match of the Day highlights show. Motson provided commentary for the EA Sports FIFA video game series. For FIFA 96, Motson initially joined the team. Motson declared in September 2017 that he would leave the BBC at the conclusion of the current football season.
