Before turning to cartooning full-time in 1995, Adams held a number of positions in the business world. He held jobs as a teller, management trainee, programmer, analyst of budgets, commercial lender, product manager, and supervisor. Afterwards, he changed jobs, working at Pacific Bell. While working for Pacific Bell, Adams co-founded Dilbert with United Media in 1989. His first compensation from Dilbert was a $368.62 monthly royalty cheque. Dilbert gained popularity over time. In 1991, 100 newspapers carried the syndicate, and 400 did so by 1994.
Once Dilbert appeared in 800 newspapers, Adams's fame grew and he started working as a cartoonist full-time. The Dilbert Principle, his debut business book, was published in 1996. Adams received the Reuben Award for Distinguished Cartoonist and Best Newspaper Comic Strip from the National Cartoonists Association in 1997. Adams was given permission by Pierluigi Zappacosta, the CEO of Logitech, to pose as a management consultant. The comic appeared in 2,000 publications in 57 countries and 19 languages by the year 2000. His comic strips were turned into the Dilbert TV series, which aired on UPN from January 1999 to January 2000. Together with Larry Charles, a Seinfeld writer, Adams acted as executive producer and showrunner for the programme. In 1999, the programme won a Primetime Emmy.
