The Banyan

The Banyan Date Of Foundation

Vandana Gopikumar and Vaishnavi Jayakumar accidentally saw a woman walking in the middle of a busy road in Chennai in 1993. She was destitute and visibly distressed, suffering from a mental health problem. In their search for a safe haven for her, they discovered that there were no services that catered to the needs of the underserved group of homeless women with mental illnesses. Several more such interactions over the next few months disillusioned the couple, and the idea was developed that they should take action themselves to solve the situation. The Banyan was founded on August 27, 1993, as a result of this.

The Banyan Activity

The Banyan Collective provides work and employment opportunities for citizens with psychosocial disabilities through social co-operatives and enterprises, as well as employment placements and chances in internal work units such as front office, housekeeping, health care services, data entry, research, arts and crafts, and any other bespoke placement suited to a person's interest. People with lived experience of mental health disorders or homelessness make up about a 25percent of our staff at all levels. We work with a variety of businesses to help persons with mental illnesses stay in the workforce.

Vandana Gopikumar(Ph.D., Managing Trustee Vandana Gopikumar, Ph.D., Co-Founder)

Vandana Gopikumar has been instrumental in developing previously non-existent ways to treat and protocols for homeless people with mental health difficulties since co-founding The Banyan in 1993. Vandana now mentors a second line of leadership at both The Banyan and BALM, and she serves on the boards of both companies, mostly providing strategic direction and clinical feedback.

Vaishnavi Jayakumar  (Incapacity Rights Activist and Co-Founder)

In 1993, Vaishnavi Jayakumar left her MBA program to co-found The Banyan. Vaishnavi was in charge of Administration and Finance during this time, and she was always engaging the staff with her unique ideas, activities, and training as part of The Banyan's human resource management approach. Vaishnavi stepped down as managing trustee in 2008 as part of a bigger strategy to leave the organization's survival to its second-line.
