Betty was a dancer from 1946 to 1952. She formerly served as a secretary for Labour MPs Barbara Castle and Geoffrey de Freitas. From 1960 to 1962, she worked as a legislative assistant for an American Congressman named Silvio Conte in Washington, D.C. She was elected to Hammersmith Borough Council in the Gibbs Green ward in 1965, where she served until 1968.
Boothroyd became an assistant Government Whip in 1974 and a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1975 to 1977. She joined the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs in 1979 and served on the Speaker's Panel of Chairmen until January 1, 2000. From 1981 to 1987, she served on the Labour Party's National Executive Committee (NEC), and from 1983 to 1987, she served on the House of Commons Commission.
Following the 1987 general election, Boothroyd was appointed Deputy Speaker under Speaker Bernard Weatherill. She was just the second female Deputy Speaker in British history, following Betty Harvie Anderson, and held the position for five years. She was elected Speaker in 1992, becoming the first woman to occupy the role. On October 23, 2000, she resigned as Speaker and as an MP by accepting the job of Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds.
